My Opinion About 'When Animals Dream' Movie

"When Animals Dream" is a Danish supernatural horror film directed by Jonas Alexander Arnby. The film explores themes of change, identity, and the isolation of growing up in a small, close-knit community. My opinion on the plot and theme of the film is as follows:

The film seems to blend elements of modern drama with elements of horror and the supernatural, creating a unique and interesting story. Mary's transformation into a werewolf serves as a metaphor for her own journey of self-discovery and acceptance. Her initial confusion and fear gradually gives way to embracing her true nature despite social rejection.

The film effectively depicts the eerie and isolated atmosphere of a remote coastal village, adding a sense of foreboding and mystery throughout the story. Mary's relationship with her mother, who is also a werewolf, adds an emotional depth to the story, as Mary must grapple with her family's dark secret.

The film also explores themes of prejudice and discrimination, as the villagers react with fear and violence when they discover Mary's true nature. It reflects real-world issues of intolerance and bigotry, making the film's themes resonate on a deep level.

The transformation scenes and special effects appear to be well executed, contributing to the overall atmosphere of the film. However, it's worth noting that the horror elements are balanced with a focus on character development and interpersonal relationships, which may make the film more appealing to those who appreciate a character-driven narrative.

In short, “When Animals Dream” appears to be a thought-provoking and atmospheric film that combines elements of horror and coming-of-age to explore themes of identity, acceptance, and the consequences of being different in a small, unforgiving community. If you enjoy supernatural horror with a deep emotional and thematic layer, this film may be worth a watch.

When Animals Dream (2014) Movie Explanation

The film begins and we see a 16 year old girl named Mary. She lives in a small village by the sea where everyone catches fish to earn a living. Mary had come to the doctor for her checkup because she had a strange mark on her body, although she was not injured. The doctor reassured her that there was no need to fear and that the scar would heal soon.

When Mary comes home, we see her family, including her mom and dad. Her mother is paralyzed and cannot walk or speak, so Mary takes care of her. Mary starts working at a fish point to improve her financial condition. On her first day on the job, she helps a delivery boy named Daniel after he collapses.

Later, Mary sees a doctor at her home who appears to have a serious talk about her mother. Mary's father tries to hide it from her, but Mary manages to steal the doctor's file and sees X-rays and pictures of people with deep wounds. She hides the file before her father calls her.

At night, Mary hears a strange sound and sees her father shaving and creaming her mother's body. She finds it strange but she ignores it. The next morning, Mary goes to work and her interactions with Daniel escalate. However, Daniel warns her not to get too close to him.

The nasty employee at Fish Point keeps harassing Mary and talking bad about her mother. Mary becomes angry and throws a glass at him, narrowly missing him. This angers the employee, but the manager of Fish Point seems pleased with Mary's response.

Later, the evil employee and his friend catch Mary alone and start treating her strangely. As they tease her, Mary's body undergoes a strange change, her veins rise above her skin. The nasty employee tries to force-feed her raw fish, causing her to cry.

When Mary looks at herself in the mirror at home, she sees hair growing on her chest where the scar used to be. She begins to worry and becomes angry, losing control in the bathroom. Other changes take place in his body, his bones keep changing and his shape keeps changing.

The next day, when Mary takes her mother for a walk, Daniel arrives and shakes her mother's hand. However, his mother holds his hand tightly. Mary struggles to feed her mother properly and deliberately throws food in her mother's mouth. This makes her father angry and Mary says something hurtful to him before going to her room.

Mary was tired of her daily routine and frustrated by her increasing anger. When her father asked her about her behavior, she showed him the marks on her body, which left him shocked. Mary had received a file containing a picture of a ship, pictures of injured people, and a sketch of a woman covered in hair. She decided to investigate further and went to the Fish Point manager, but he did not respond. Instead, he took her to a club where she drank and made out with Daniel, whom she was in love with, at a secret location. To his delight, his body began to change, with hair growing all over his body and his eyes turning golden in colour. Her father and the doctor try to inject her, but her mother, who turns out to be a werewolf, attacks the doctor. Mary realized that she too was becoming a werewolf like her mother. To protect her mother from the villagers, Mary and her father secretly buried the doctor's body. Mary's mother had turned into a werewolf on a ship where she attacked and killed some Russians. The villagers wanted to kill his mother, but his father compromised. However, the next morning, some villagers come to their house suspecting his mother. After confirming that his mother was human, they leave, but with lingering doubts. When Mary returned home from work, she found her mother's body in the bathtub. The villagers secretly killed his mother. Mary got frustrated and called her father. Now concerned for Mary's safety, her father buries her mother's body and takes her to the funeral pyre. During the funeral, Mary's fingernails begin to fall off, revealing her werewolf identity. She decides to openly embrace her true nature, despite the objections of the Fish Point manager. Her father tries to persuade her to conceal her identity, but Mary refuses. The next day, Mary's hair started growing and she could not control her anger. Everyone saw her transformation when she went to work. When a group of villagers started chasing her in the evening, she ran away to save her life.
